Medicine Cat's Herb Guide
Herbs And Their Uses

Alder Bark The bark of an alder tree, grows mainly in boggy, wet terrain. Eases toothaches.
Beech Leaves Large, broad leaves that can be serrated, entire or sparsely toothed. Grows in almost any soil that is not waterlogged. Have no effect but are used by ThunderClan medicine cats for carrying other herbs.
Blackberry Leaves Leaves from the prickly blackberry bush, found almost anywhere; they are very hardy plants. These leaves are chewed into a pulp to ease the swelling of bee stings.
Borage Leaves To be chewed and eaten. The plant can be distinguished by its small blue or pink star-shaped flowers and hairy leaves. Great for nursing queens as it helps increase their supple of milk. Also brings down fever.
Burdock Root A stall-stemmed, sharp-smelling thistle with dark leaves. A medicine cat must dig up the roots, wash off the dirt, and chew them into a pulp, which can be applied to rat bites. Cures infection.
Burnet Has oval-shaped leaves with serrated edges. Stems grow 50-200cm tall, with large clusters of small flower buds on top. A traveling herb usually found in dry, grassy meadows. Keeps a cat's strength up.
Catchweed A plant with fuzzy green balls on long stems. It is common in hedges and other low, shrubby vegetation. The burrs stops poultices from being rubbed off without hurting the skin.
Catmint (or catnip) A delicious-smelling, leafy plant that's hard to find in the wild; often found growing in twoleg gardens. The best remedy for greencough.
Celandine A yellow flower with four petals. Grows better on ThunderClan's territory, though it also grows on RiverClan's territory. Juice is trickled into the damaged eye to soothe it.
Chamomile A small, white flower with a large, yellow center most commonly found in two-leg gardens. Eaten to strengthen the heart and soothe the mind. Also given to traveling cats for strength.
Chervil A sweet-smelling plant with large, spreading, fernlike leaves and small white flowers. The juice of the leaves can be used for infected wounds, and chewing the roots helps with bellyache. Can also be used during kitting.
Chickweed Tall-stemmed plant with fat, almond-shaped leaves. Grows near the river in warm, rocky places. Treats greencough, though catmint is often preferred.
Cobnut A smooth brown nut with a hard outside shell. A type of hazelnut. Found in, under or near hazel trees that grow in sunny spots. Made into ointments.
Cobweb Spiderwebs can be found all over the forest; be careful not to bring along the spider when you take the web! Medicine cats wrap it around and injury to soak up the blood and keep the wound clean. Stops bleeding. May also be used to bind broken bones.
Coltsfoot A flowering plan, a bit like a dandelion, with yellow or white flowers. The leaves can be chewed into a pulp, which is eaten to help shortness of breath and kitten-cough, as well as cracked or sore pads.
Comfrey Root Identifiable by its large leaves and small bell-shaped flowers, which can be pink, white, or purple. The fat black roots of this plant can be chewed into a poultice to mend broken bones, wrenched claws, or soothe wounds. Can be used for itching or for inflammation on stiff joints.
Daisy Leaf Thick, dark green, oval shaped leaves. Found almost everywhere. Chewed into a paste to ease the pain of aching joints. Also a travelling herb.
Dandelion Common yellow-flowered plant with long, hollow stems. After flowering is finished, the flower transforms a sphere made out of hundreds of smaller white florets with seed heads at the bottom that connect to the flower head. Found almost everywhere. The white liquid is used to soothe and heal bee stings. Its leaves can also be chewed to act like a painkiller.
Dock A plant similar to sorrel. The leaf can be chewed up and applied to soothe scratches, though can sting when being applied. Also soothes sore pads.
Dried Oak Leaf Collected in the autumn and stored in a dry place. Stops infection.
Fennel Thin, spiky leaves. Found in numerous places, especially on dry soils near the sea/coast and on riverbanks. Stalks are broken and juice is squeezed into the receiver's mouth to help pain in the hips.
Feverfew A small bush with flowers like daisies, has a sharp tangy smell and small soft leaves. The leaves can be eaten to cool down body temperature, particularly with cats with fever or chills. Grows best along the water. Also heals aches and pains, especially good for headaches.
Goldenrod A tall plant with bright yellow flowers. Grows well on the WindClan moors. A poultice of this is terrific for healing wounds.
Heather Nectar Nectar found in bell-shaped flowers best grown in shady areas. Included in herbal mixtures since it makes swallowing easier and sweetens them.
Honey A sweet, golden liquid created by bees. Difficult to collect without getting stung, but great for soothing infections or the throats of cats who have breathed smok also soothes infections, helps cats swallow other concoctions, helps soothe coughing, and gives energy.
Horsetail A tall plant with bristly stems that grows in marshy areas. The leaves can be used to treat infected wounds and stop bleeding. Usually chewed up and applied as a poultice.
Ivy Leaves Leaves from the ivy vine used by ShadowClan to store other herbs.
Juniper Berries A bush with spiky dark green leaves and purple berries. The berries soothe bellyaches and help cats who are having trouble breathing.
Lamb's Ear Soft, fuzzy green plant commonly found in the mountains. Gives a cat strength.
Lavender A small purple flowering plant. Grown in Twoleg gardens. Can also be found in sunny spots with sandy or gravelly soil. Cures fever and chills. Also a herb used to hide the scent of death.
Mallow Leaves Large fuzzy three-nubbed leaves from a flowering shrub; sweet rose scent. Grows best near shore, but best collected at sunhigh, when they are dry. Eaten to soothe bellyaches.
Marigold A bright orange or yellow flower that grows low to the ground. The petals or leaves can be chewed into a pulp and applied as a poultice to wounds, also eaten. Stops infection, soothes bellyaches, gives strength, and helps troubled breathing. It is also used to help calm cats.
Mint Downy, serrated leaves ranging from green to purple and yellow in colour. Flowers are small and white or purple in color. Rubbed on a dead body to hide the scent of death.
Mouse Bile A bad-smelling liquid that is the only remedy for ticks, Dab a little moss soaked in bile on a tick and it'll fall right off. Wash paws thoroughly in running water afterward.
Parsley A long-stemmed plant with ragged-edged crinkly leaves, sharp scent, tastes cold and fresh, tastes the same fresh or dried. Grows best in moist, well drained soil, with full sun. Eaten to stop a queen from producing milk if her kits die, don't need milk anymore, or are producing too much milk. Also used to cure bellyache.
Poppy Seed Small black seed shaken from a dried poppy flower, these are fed to cats to help them sleep. Soothes cats suffering from shock and distress. Not recommended for nursing queens.
Ragwort Leaves Tall shrub with yellow flowers. Tastes foul to cats. Found almost everywhere, especially in cool areas with high rainfall. Crushed and chewed; mixed with juniper berries, it can help aching joints. Also keeps a cat's strength up.
Ragweed Ragged-leaved plant resembling a fern. Commonly found in the mountains, it gives cat extra strength.
Raspberry Leaves Soft to the touch, but with jagged edges. A painkiller, also stops bleeding during kitting.
Rosemary Tall with needle-like leaves and purple flowers. Put on the pelt of a dead cat to prepare for burial, hides the scent of death.
Rush It has long narrow leaves and lavender-colored head stalks. Often grows in infertile soils in a wide range of moisture conditions. Helps hold a broken limb in place.
Snakeroot Grows mainly in warmer areas, however some grow in cooler areas. The best remedy for poison, especially snake bites. Applied to wound.
Sorrel Similar to dock, Sorrel is used as a traveling herb. Found near two-leg nests.
Stinging Nettle The spiny green seeds can be administered to a cat who's swallowed poison, while the leaves can be applied to a wound to bring down swelling. Can be mixed with comfrey to help heal broken bones. Helps with wounds.
Tansy A strong-smelling plant with round yellow flowers. Good for curing coughs, but must be eaten in small doses. Can be used to cure wounds and poisons. Stops cats from getting greencough and soothes throats.
Tormentil It has a strong, aromatic scent to it and a sharp taste. Found in most cool or cold areas, but other types may be found in gardens. Chewed and put on the wound. Its root is good for treating all wounds and extracting poison.
Thyme This herb can be eaten to calm anxiety frayed nerves.
Watermint A leafy green plant found in streams or damp earth. Usually chewed into a pulp and then fed to a cat suffering bellyache
Wild Garlic Rolling in a patch of wild garlic can help prevent infection, especially for dangerous wounds like rat bites.
Willow Bark Bark of a Willow Tree, found near two-leg places. Eases pain.
Winter Green Easily identifiable by its red berries. Found in oak-pine woods and sandy habitats to sub-alpine places. Treats wounds and some poisons.
Yarrow A flowering plant whose leaves can be made into a poultice and applied to wounds or scratched to expel poison.
POISONOUS PLANTS:
Deathberries Red berries that can be fatally poisonous to kits and elders. They are NOT a medicine. Known to twolegs as yew berries.
Foxglove Seeds Tiny black seeds from the bell-shaped flower of the flox-glove plant. Found almost everywhere, especially in temperate regions. They are used to treat the heart, they can easily cause paralysis and heart failure.
Holly Berries A plant with spiny leaves that produces red berries with no medicinal value. Usually found in the forest, this berries, while not as dangerous as deathberries, are still a threat to kits.
Deadly Nightshade A small shrub with faintly scented, bell-shaped flowers that are purple tinged with green in colour. Berries are shiny and black when ripe. Found in moist, shady places. Often grows in places where the soils are rich in limestone. Used to kill a cat who cannot be saved quickly.
Water Hemlock Green or white flowers with petals in umbrella-shaped clusters, usually found in marshy areas. It causes writhing and foaming at the mouth.
